달콤한 딸기, 호두, 싱싱한 채소 등을 드레싱으로 버무린 샐러드는 재료 각각의 맛을 잃지 않으면서 샐러드라는 한 음식을 만들어 낸다. 3월3일 오후3시에 올림픽 공원에 위치한 K-아트홀에서 열린 타악기, 태권도, 한국무용, 비보잉이 결합된 공연 ‘탈’의 공연을 관람하고 나니 마치 샐러드를 먹은 상큼한 느낌이다.

분명 태권도가 스토리를 끌고 가는 주요한 수단 중에 하나지만 기술 위주로 보여주는 기존의 태권도 공연에서 벗어나려는 의도이다. 물방울이 튀기면서 하는 드럼의 연주는 강렬한 비트를 눈으로 보는 것 같았다. 한국 무용이 분위기를 한결 부드럽게 해주고 다시 빠른 회전을 보여주는 비보잉이 관중들을 환호하게 했다. 하나도 놓칠 수 없었던 이 공연은 샐러드의 맛이 톡톡 났다.

태권도 공연은 한국인과 세계에 흩어져 살면서 고국을 그리워하는 재외동포들의 마음을 위로하고 용기를 주는데 큰 역할을 했다. ‘탈’의 주인공 중의 한 명인 ‘마스’ 역할을 한 국가 대표 태권도 시범단 강훈직씨는 해외공연을 하면서 “한인들이 향수를 느끼며 눈물을 흘리는데 공연하는 자신이 감동적이었다”고 말한다.

이렇게 투어를 하며 특별 행사 때에만 있었던 태권도 공연이 이제 안정적으로 자리 잡았다. 태권도 공연장인 K-아트홀이 2012년 11월21일 개관된 것이다. 런던에 있는 ‘오페라의 유령’ 전용극장처럼 해외의 전용 극장이 부러웠던 기자에게는 기쁜 소식이었다.

이제 태권도 공연장이 생겼으니 찾아가는 태권도 공연과 더불어 찾아오는 태권도 공연을 만들어야 한다. 주방기구가 악기가 된 ‘난타’ 공연은 전용극장이 생기고 해외 관광객이 찾는 명소가 됐다. 특히 중국인 단체 관광객이 서울에서 들리는 필수 코스가 됐다. 난타 극장 주위에는 관광차가 줄을 잇고 관광객이 북적인다.

서울 송파구에 올림픽 공원에 위치한 태권도 공연장은 난타극장이 있는 명동이나 홍대 주변에 비해 서울 중심부에서의 접근성이 떨어진다. 그렇지만 새로운 것을 시도하면서 샐러드를 만드는 태권도 공연 콘텐츠와 아름다운 올림픽 공원 안에 있다는 점을 활용하면 관광객 유치에 성공할 수 있다.

외국인 관광객 1000만명 시대에 절반 이상을 차지하는 일본과 중국 관광객을 공략해야 한다. 특히 단체 여행을 하는 중국 관광객은 유치는 눈여겨 볼만하다.

태권도에 대해 중국의 우슈와 일본의 가라테가 자존심 싸움을 하기도 했다. 일본은 태권도를 직접 배우는 일은 많지 않지만 일본 관광객들은 태권도 공연을 한류 문화로 받아들여서 관심이 많다.

이에 비하여 중국은 태권도에 대하여 적극적이다. 태권도 4단인 한 중국 유학생은 “우슈에 관심을 기울이던 때는 중국이 사회적으로 불안했던 때이고 경제적으로 풍족해진 현대에서는 중국인들이 서양 무술과 한국 태권도에 대한 관심이 점점 높아지고 있다”고 말했다.

어렸을 때부터 태권도를 수련하는 아이들의 숫자가 증가하는 것을 볼 수 있는데 중국인들은 태권도를 문화로 즐기고 있다.

태권도 공연에 뭐든 섞어 새로운 브랜드로 만들 수 있다. 두부 샐러드, 닭가슴 샐러드, 감자 샐러드 등 재료에 따라 다양한 샐러드가 만들어지는 것처럼 케이팝(K-POP), 한국 영화 등 한국적인 것 뿐 아니라 미국의 팝, 인도의 음악 등 세계적인 재료도 섞을 수 있다. 앞으로 어떤 샐러드가 만들어질지 기대된다.

Would you experience taekwondo like a salad? 

A salad is a food that contains a combination of multiple vegetables, fruits that create a harmonious taste without losing each ingredient’s individual taste. I have encountered a similar experience while watching ‘Tal’, which is a takwondo performance combined with percussion, Korean traditional dance and B-boying, at K-Art hall, Olympic park, on March 3rd.

It’s true that taekwondo has had a main role in leading a story. However ‘Tal’ intends to go beyond showing taekwondo technique that previous taekwondo performances have used. Water splashed from the drums when drummers hit them and I could literally ‘see’ each beat. Korean dance made the stage softer and B-boying, which showed faster spinning, let the audience cheer. Each performance tasted like the different tangs of salad.

Taekwondo performance has an important role in consoling Koreans who are living in foreign countries and miss Korea. Kang, Hwon Jig, who is one of the main characters of ‘Tal’ and a member of national taekwondo performance said “I was so impressed to see Korean Taekwondo, and was in tears during the world tour.”

Now taekwondo performances have a regular place in professional theathers. A taekwodo theater, K-Art hall opened on November 21, 2012. It was good news for me that I envy an exclusive theater such as ‘the phantom of the opera” in London, England.

We have a taekwondo theater, so all it needs are people to visit. We need more visitors at this theater. Nanta, a performance usingkitchen utensils, has become popular for foreigners after opening the exclusive theater. It is especially required for Chinese group tourists to visit. I can see many tourist buses and people around the theater almost every day.

The taekwondo theater is in the Olympic park in Songpagu, Seoul. It is far from central Seoul compared with Myungdong and Hongdae, where is Nanta theaters are located. However it will succeed to induce tourists with taekwondo contents that brings new tastes like salad and the merit that it is located in beautiful Olympic park.

Over ten million people visit Korea. Among them, Japanese and Chinese tourists consists more than half of the visitors. They are our main target, and it is especially worthy to notice Chinese group tourists.

Wu shu from China and karade from Japan has stroke sparks. Just a few Japanese learn taekwondo but Japanese people are also interested in taekwondo, one of the Hanry, Korean wave now.

In comparison the Chinese show enthusiasm toward taekwondo. A Chinese student who studies in Korea and is 4th dan of taekwondo, said, “Chinese was interested in wu shu when China’s society was unrest. Now that China is in economic affluence they are more attracted to western martial arts and taekwondo.” More and more children in China learn taekwondo and Chinese enjoys taekwondo as a culture.

Anything could mix in taekwondo performance to make a new brand. Just like there are various salads such as tofu, chicken breasts, potato according to their ingredients, we can combine not only Korean ingredients such as K-POP, Korean movie but also ingredients around the world such as American pop, Indian music. I expect an infinite number of performances that Korean martial arts can create.
